Ellis & Cephas - I'm Gonna Miss You Girl (7", 1979)
Originally titled 'I'm Gonna Miss You Berle' after Milton Berle was banned from Saturday Night Live for his disastrous guest-hosting appearance in 1979. Just before pressing, executives at Von's Records forced the duo to re-record the track, replacing 'Berle' with 'Girl'.

Loose Ends - A Little Spice (A Little Spice, 1983)
This reminds me of the smooth jazz station my dad always tuned to when we cruised around Miami in his jag convertible. And also the hold music at Walgreens pharmacy.
labels: eighties, instrumental, soul, vicodin

Tats Yamashita - Magic Ways (Big Wave, 1984)
The soundtrack to this Japanese surfer film is laden with uninspired Beach Boys covers but the original compositions are pretty choice. Handclaps at 2:22.

Love Unlimited Orchestra - Forever In Love (Music Maestro Please, 1975)
Another joyously seductive production from the dearly departed Barry White, no doubt smiling down on us from his heavenly cloud. "Ambrosia? No thanks. I'll have a bucket of ribs and a banana shake, please."
labels: instrumental, seventies, soul

Pattie Brooks - After Dark (12", 1978)
Pretty Pattie cut her teeth on US TV in the early seventies, singing and dancing behind the main attractions on 'The Ann-Margret Show' and 'Tonight With Johnny Carson'. Only when Donna Summer hired her to sing backing vocals did Pattie set her sights on the dancefloor, adding the camp and charisma of American showbiz to the electronic pulse of the Euro-Disco.

Pram - Mother Of Pearl (Museum Of Imaginary Animals, 2000)
Ponytone rarely celebrates the products of this doomed and gaudy new millennium, but let us sing of this unsung band whose wobbly warmth led many to dismiss them as indie. In truth, they have written themselves a footnote in the grand history of experimental pop music. Pram people of Birmingham we salute you and your gilded theremin.
labels: experimental

White Mice - Nothing Never Done Before The Time (12", 1986)
White Mice was at the vanguard of the original digital reggae scene, though he was only 16 when he cut his first side in 1984. By '87 he had fallen off the radar, known only to hardcore ragamuffins until German techno label Basic Channel reissued his recordings last year to widespread acclaim (in my house at least)

Ronnie McNeir - Wendy Is Gone (Ronnie McNeir, 1975)
Last night I taped the image of Ronnie at his piano to the mirror of my vanity, and now I'm considering changing my name to Wendy. I guess I'm in deep.
